Each year, on the 20th of November, the world commemorates the Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR). Yet another year, we have observed a significant amount of hate, antagonism, violence, and hostility targeted towards the transgender and gender-diverse community worldwide. The record-setting phase of anti-transgender legislation being introduced around the world has made matters worse. This hostility has contributed to unnecessary violence and the loss of too many precious lives.

Globally, TGEU’s Transrespect versus Transphobia Worldwide (TvT) reported that an estimated 375 trans and gender-diverse people had been murdered between the 1st of October 2020 and the 30th of September 2021. Reports predict that 2021 is one of the deadliest years for the transgender and gender-diverse community.

Sadly, 2021 is not even over yet.

What can you do to support the transgender community this TDoR? Here are a few suggestions for you to offer support in a meaningful way:

  1. Donate to local charities that support trans and gender-diverse people.
  2. Join a protest or attend a vigil this TDoR. Look for upcoming events in your area on social media or the internet.
  3. Contact your local legislator or sign a petition to take a stand against any anti-transgender legislation that might be in the works.
  4. Be mindful. Use more inclusive language and encourage others to do so. You can start by using the correct pronouns and gender-neutral language with your friends, family, and coworkers.

Creating a safer and more inclusive world for transgender and gender-diverse people is a top priority for InterPride. All InterPride members can count on our support. We are open to feedback and ideas from members on the different ways we can work together and assist Pride organizers in these challenging times.
